How self catering works
The best way to think of a self catering holiday is a 'home from home'.

Renting a self catering cottage or apartment for a holiday in the UK is simply a very short term let for a fully furnished and functional holiday home. It offers very good value for money because you can live in a similar fashion to how you would at home without incurring any extra costs other than the rental price, if you wish. The accommodation is equipped with a kitchen, cooker, refrigerator and many other household appliance that you would have in your own home. The quality of the accommodation and standard of accommodation will depend on the rental price. You can choose simple good value cottages or luxury self catering accommodation depending on how much you would like to pay.

The self catering cottages are to be found all over the UK and Ireland, in beautiful rural locations, also seaside cottages around the coast.

How does it work?
The stages of booking a cottage through a brochure

1. Find the cottage that you would like to rent in your cottage brochure

2. Phone the cottage owner or agency to make sure that it is available for the dates you would like to rent it for. Most like to rent from Saturday to Saturday or Friday to Friday. Short breaks are generally available in low season months or last minute.

3. Request a booking form

4. Read carefully through the terms and conditions. If you are satisfied with cancellations clauses and payment terms, complete the booking form and pay the required deposit.

5. Sending the booking form and deposit is a binding agreement for that booking. Pay the balance at the required time, which will be different for each holiday cottage.

You should receive written confirmation by letter or e-mail of each payment that you make. You should also receive the full address address of your holiday home and a time arranged to hand over the key. Most cottage owners will be there to meet you on arrival and give you a guided tour to explain the essentials.

Before your holiday

Take out suitable insurance to cover the cost of the accommodation should you need to cancel because of illness or family emergencies.

Research your holiday destination so that you make the most of your destination when you get there. There may be shows at the local theatre or plays that you might like to book, or to obtain tickets for gardens and events which are often at a reduced price online. We all aim to obtain the very best deals available and that can really only be done by planning in advance or signing up for notification of best deals.
